A Man and a Boy - Shamik Banerjee

(i)

Potbellied Bobby is as cheerful as a bab;

in the alehouse, with friends, he would guffaw and gab;

although, like all of us, he has his troubles too,

no one knows how his secret life’s so well-to-do.

Some say his lard is huge enough for grief to store;

to burn it and create, for others, gladness more.

Young Leany Lightmouth’s the most silent boy in class.

All call him “Measly Dunce” and think his voice is crass.

Though his unprepared actions seem mookish and steep,

his words are very wise, and his Poetry’s deep.

Some say that his complicacy has made him thin

or that some cruel past has made him complex within.

Shamik Banerjee is a poet from India.
