There was a ghost below the linoleum.  Under the floors that are under the floor, this floor has been sloppily remodeled 7 or 8 times, exactly twice after each murder.  He could see through the many floors as though it was a cross-section of lasagna. He saw the ghost of an old man as small as a baby.
